Hopi artist Donnie
Supplee is a member of the Bear Clan and was born in 1965 in Ganado,
Arizona and grew up near the Hopi Reservation in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Both his parents were educators. Donnie studied culinary arts, and
after several years as an accomplished chef, started watching his
older brother Charles doing sliversmiting.
After working with Charles
for three years, Donnie developed his own unique style using
metal fabrication, inlaying, stone casting and lost wax. He like to
use three-dimensional carvings and combinations of turquoise, coral,
and diamonds in 14K gold.
His works have been featured
in Arizona Highways magazine, and he has been recognized with awards
at the Annual Intertribal Ceremonial in Gallup, NM. His works
also appear in the book Art of the Hopi by Jerry and Lois Jacka, and
are in the National Collection in Washington DC. His work also
have been featured at the Gilcrease Museum in Oklahoma, Buffalo Bill
Museum in Cody, Wyoming, Eiteljorge Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana,
and the Indian Craft Shop at the Department of Interior in
Washington DC.
